Bald Head Island is accessible only by ferry or boat. The ferry runs from Indigo Plantation in Southport on the mainland. There are no cars allowed on the island.

The island has 174 acres of upland forests set aside as part of the NC coastal reserve. There are marshlands and maritime forests. This is a prime nesting location of the loggerhead turtle.
