Watch out for the surf board. It can fly out from under you and hit you. Try to avoid a wipeout. Know the best way to fall. Know your skill level. Know the surfing area as in learn about the waves, currents, undertows, riptides, undercurrents and what the bottom of the ocean is like in the area you are surfing. Ask the locals who surf.
