Fort Mitchell is located in Hilton Head Plantation on Hilton Head Island. You have to ask for a pass for the Fort from a guard at the Hilton Head Plantation entrance gate. The pass is only for visiting the fort. The fort was built in 1863 by the Union during the Civil War. It was a base for the blockade of Confederate supplies to both Charleston SC and Savannah GA. You can tour the remains of the earthworks. There are two civil war cannons on the site.
