The sea islands are located from Charleston to the Savannah River. They were once an area where plantations were prosperous. The plantation owners were so very rich that their slaves outnumbered them. The sea island cotton produced by the plantations were highly prized for their silky texture. Other plantations in the area raised indigo and rice. During the American civil war, in 1861, union ships drove plantation owners away, leaving the plantations to the African slaves. Gullah refers to the culture and language that developed from descendents of these slaves.
